Will sodium-ion batteries replace lithium-ion batteries?

As of my last update in September 2021, lithium-ion batteries were the dominant technology for portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. While sodium-ion batteries showed promise as an alternative due to the abundance of sodium, they were still in the early stages of development and faced challenges in matching the performance and energy density of lithium-ion batteries.

It's possible that advancements have been made beyond my last update, so I recommend checking more recent sources for the latest developments in battery technology to see if sodium-ion batteries have made significant progress towards replacing lithium-ion batteries.

Why are sodium-ion batteries so rare?

As of my last update in September 2021, sodium-ion batteries were not as prevalent as lithium-ion batteries for several reasons:

Development Stage: Sodium-ion batteries were in the early stages of research and development compared to lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries had a head start and had undergone decades of refinement and commercialization, making them the established choice for various applications.

Performance Challenges: Sodium-ion batteries faced certain performance challenges, such as lower energy density and shorter cycle life compared to lithium-ion batteries. These limitations made them less attractive for widespread adoption.

Market Demand and Investment: The market demand for lithium-ion batteries was significant due to the rapid growth of portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. This demand encouraged substantial investments in lithium-ion battery technology, furthering its progress and making it challenging for other battery technologies, like sodium-ion batteries, to compete.

Existing Infrastructure: The infrastructure for manufacturing and recycling lithium-ion batteries was already well-established. Switching to a new battery technology like sodium-ion would require significant investment and adaptation of the existing infrastructure, which can be a slow and costly process.
