What happens when you connect a positive terminal to a negative terminal to a battery?

Mar 01, 2022   Pageview:11500

A battery produces electricity when connected to wires with different positive and negative charges. It has enough power to light up a light bulb, but the wire doesn't spin like a fan blade because the current flows in only one direction. The wire does not create any counterbalancing force for the moving electrons. Electricity is a strange thing. It can either cure or damage, depending on how it's used. In the wrong hands, electricity can be a dangerous weapon that causes many potential harms to people and property. Many electrical fires and electrical accidents have left people seriously injured or even dead.

Voltage is referred to as the difference in potential energy between two points. It's measured in volts and is a scalar quantity. If you have a battery and connect positive to negative, you will have zero voltage as there is no difference in potential energy between the terminals. In other words, they are at the same level of energy. Wondering what will happen if you connect the positive and negative sides? It's really simple. The positive side should be connected to the negative through some conductive material (wire, for example). Then electrical current flows from the positive terminal to the negative terminal with no external load. As a result, electrons move from one terminal to another through the wire; that is how electricity is generated. Electrons can flow freely until they meet an obstruction.

Batteries contain two electrodes, a negative and a positive. This means that they produce electricity when an outside source of energy (such as the sun or wind) is applied. So, theoretically speaking, if you were to connect the positive and negative terminals on a battery with each other, would anything happen? In short: no! While it's not technically possible for the battery terminals to touch each other (insulators are in between).

When you connect a positive terminal to a negative terminal on a battery charger, what happens?

A battery charger is a device that charges the rechargeable batteries of electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and digital cameras. When scientists connect positive and negative wires, they can create good radios and TVs. If positive to negative on a battery charger are connected, the current will flow, and the device will charge. If the wires in a phone or laptop are reversed, it won't work and may be damaged. Even though both wires are supposed to be hot (carry current), some devices have one side designated as neutral or ground. These devices typically work best when connected correctly. If the positive and negative leads on a battery charger are connected, it will work reverse. For example, if a 9-volt battery is connected to the 2 pins that are usually connected to the "+" and "-" connections, then the light on the charger will be brighter.

When positive to negative on a battery charger is connected, it can cause a spark and potentially start an electrical fire. Batteries contain two different types of liquid. One is the acid fluid that causes the chemical reaction that creates energy, and there is also a saturated solution inside, which keeps the acids separate. Both have to be kept in balance for the battery to work right.

What happens if you connect the positive terminal to negative with a speaker?

The idea behind connecting positive and negative on a speaker is to achieve better sound quality by getting rid of distortion through impedance matching. Usually, speakers have low impedance. Even connection with amplifiers will give a bad result. It can be explained with an experiment. This experiment is not recommended in school: The speakers are connected to the positive and negative terminals. The battery has 12 volts and will provide power. The speakers are connected in series, so that the current will move through both of them. In this case, the current doubles because there is no resistance between them, but if they were stacked on top of each other, there would be twice as much resistance between them, so less current would flow; it would still go through both terminals.

The current flow is from positive towards negative always, and a short circuit can also occur if these current-carrying wires touch each other. Generally, the positive wire is green or red, and the negative one is black, but color differentiation does not matter in most speakers. Any wire can be set as positive or negative. But crossing these wires will cause auditory dysfunction. The polarity will be disturbed, and a proper sound will not come out of the speaker. The final step in wiring a speaker is to connect the positive lead from an amp to one of the terminals and then again to the other terminal.

If you connect the negative terminal first, what happens?

This may seem silly, but it's a very important one to answer. If positive terminals are connected first, an electrolytic capacitor is needed. These are used in all applications, from filtering power supplies to acting as a high-frequency bypass capacitor in radio receivers. But when connecting the negative terminal first, the result is something entirely different: a supercapacitor.

When making a circuit, it is important to understand how electricity works. The electrons, or current flow, always chooses the path of minimum resistance. If connecting the negative terminal to something first, the positive terminal will have less resistance, and all of the current will go through that pin instead. This can damage the components and even melt wires if they are not rated for high currents. A warning is seen at times saying; ELECTROCUTION WARNING: Connecting the negative terminal of a power supply to the positive terminal can result in electrocution. It's a very dangerous phenomenon. The shock or the current coming through electrocution can cause death.

For the current to flow, circuits need to be complete. This means the source (the negative terminal) has to have a path that goes through something (usually an electrical device). In this case, connecting the negative and positive terminals of a battery causes electricity to flow from one end of the battery. But when you connect the negative terminal first, it can cause a short circuit, an explosive that can cause injury or a severe jerk to the device. So it is not a good idea at all.
