Laptop Battery Failure – Symptoms and Causes

May 23, 2022   Pageview:2066

Laptops are an integral part of how most people work and live—but when their battery dies, it can be an inconvenience that has lasting effects on productivity. The battery is the heart of a laptop, powering all its components and enabling you to take it with you wherever you go. However, batteries do have a finite lifespan. A laptop battery's capacity is measured in milliamp hours (mAh) or watt hours. As the amount of charge decreases, your laptop will become slower and slower until it finally dies completely.

Some laptops allow for easy battery replacement so you can keep your machine running like new. But if yours doesn't, or if you just don't have time to learn how to do it yourself, you might need to send your laptop in for repair—and while some companies offer free repairs and even free shipping, others will charge a fee for a battery replacement.

The first thing you'll notice when you're having battery problems is that your laptop will suddenly shut off without warning. This can be frustrating, as it often happens at inconvenient moments like when you're in the middle of a big presentation or an important work e-mail. This type of error is usually caused by a faulty internal component of the battery, which prevents it from working correctly or fully charging. Depending on the problem, however, this issue may be fixable by replacing a single part.

If your laptop is still under warranty, most manufacturers will replace the battery for you for free, but if it's no longer covered by their policy, you'll have to pay out-of-pocket for a new one. Many companies offer replacement batteries for sale online, and these can be significantly cheaper than buying a new laptop. If you're handy with tools and electronics, you might even consider trying to replace the part yourself—you'd just need to find someone who sells the replacement battery online, and then use their instructions to take apart your laptop and install it properly.

Laptop batteries are relatively easy to test, so you can check to see if your battery is failing. If it is, there are two basic things you can do: get a new battery or replace the laptop's power supply. You can test a laptop battery by following the following steps:

Plug in the laptop and let it charge for at least 20 minutes before testing. A charged battery will have more capacity than one that's partially drained, so the longer you wait, the better.

Turn off the screen and unplug any attached devices such as printers, external hard drives. The less power you're using from the battery, the better.

Open a text editor like Notepad and make sure no programs are running. Don’t just click on an icon—shut down everything.

Use the onscreen keyboard to type some text while watching the battery meter at the bottom of your laptop's screen. You want to see it drop slowly as you type; if it drops fast, then stops completely, then starts dropping again slowly, it means your battery is bad. Also note whether or not your laptop shuts down automatically when the battery falls below 5% capacity. If it doesn't, that's another sign of a dying battery

Laptop Battery Failure Symptoms

Some laptop battery failure symptoms can be easily mistaken for simple user error, but with some experience, you can distinguish between the two and even get a second opinion from an IT technician. The most noticeable signs of a failing laptop battery are erratic behavior from your computer. Some common examples include:

Your computer shuts down without warning when you're in the middle of something important

Your laptop suddenly freezes up, but it doesn't seem to be struggling with anything in particular—it just is frozen

Your computer lags or runs slow when you open certain programs or run multiple tasks at once

You notice that your battery has been getting worse over time, even if you're not using it that much

These signs might seem like they indicate simple user error, but they can all be caused by failure symptoms within the battery itself. The first sign is a result of a sudden power drain on the battery. If your computer shuts down without warning because its battery is dying, then an IT technician will know that there is a problem with the battery's ability to hold power for as long as it used to.

Laptop Battery Failure Causes

Laptop battery failure can be caused by a number of different issues. The most common cause is simply the natural wear and tear that happens as a result of normal use. As you use your laptop, the internal parts are all being used in order to keep your computer running smoothly. This includes the battery, which can start to wear out over time.

Exposure to extreme temperatures could also pose more of a risk. One example is if you expose your laptop to extreme temperatures. While it's true that laptops are meant to be used while they're on your lap or on your desk, they shouldn't be put under direct sunlight in hot weather or left in freezing cold areas for extended periods of time. If you let your laptop get too hot or cold for too long, it could lead to failure of the battery and possibly even permanent damage to other internal parts of the machine.

Overcharging is another common cause of laptop battery failure. Overcharging will cause the electrolyte to expand rapidly inside the battery cells and break down the separators. This can result to a large amount of gasses being produced causing pressure on the cell walls depending on how much is expanded by overcharging. If this happens too much, then a small spark will occur as gases are released out of the tiny pores in a process known as thermal runaway. Once this happens, you will notice that your internal circuit board will be damaged due to extreme heat and current flow between different components in your laptop.

Reasons for Laptop Battery Failure

Laptop batteries fail for a number of reasons. If a laptop battery fails to respond when it is connected to an electrical current, it may have reached its end-of-life and is no longer functioning as designed.

It could also be a sign of a short circuit, in which case the battery should be recycled or disposed of properly.

A laptop battery can also fail due to physical damage, such as being crushed or punctured, which can cause dangerous leaks.

For these reasons, frequent inspections of laptop batteries are recommended when used on the road. Checking for signs of external damage regularly can help prevent serious problems from arising.
