German chancellor Angela merkel said Tuesday that she supports and is committed to making electric car batteries domestically in Europe, and the economic community should be involved.

Speaking at an event hosted by the German national academy of engineering in Berlin, merkel said 40 to 50 percent of the added value of future electric vehicles will come from batteries and 20 to 30 percent from digitalization. "If one is supplied by Asia and the other by the us, there is not much left."

Ms merkel said Asian manufacturers were leading the way in the production of electric car batteries, while Europe was lagging because of high electricity and Labour costs. She said there was "some soul-searching" going on in the German car industry.

Henning kagermann, President of the national electric vehicle platform, which advises the German government on the development of electric vehicles, said yesterday that Europe should have at least one electric vehicle battery manufacturer of its own to avoid possible "dependency or supply shortages".

The eu is promoting the implementation of the "battery alliance" plan, which will gather input from all member states to realize the large-scale production of electric vehicle batteries in Europe and cover the whole industry chain from production to recycling.
