It is amazing how batteries have become increasingly popular today. Different types have been invented all with advantages and disadvantages.
One of the most recent types of batteries is the Lithium Polymer – LiPo – batteries. They are rather new on the market and being used in most electronic devices.
If you are looking for batteries with high power output and long life, then these are the best option you have. They have been proven to run longer, producing a higher voltage as an alternative to renewable energy.
Even though batteries are generally a great source of power, some drawbacks cannot be ignored. Every user needs to be aware of these drawbacks to get the most out of the batteries.
LiPo batteries are safer. As long as you use them the way they are intended to be used, everything will go your way. And that is where the use of battery connectors becomes a valuable lesson.
Know about the details of LiPo battery connector types
Before we get into the details of connectors, it is important to start with the basics. Understanding what connectors are is key to finding the right one.
So what are LiPo battery connectors?
A shallower definition would be - an electrical item that connects two or more electrical elements. The connection aims to allow for current to flow between the elements.
In other words, a connector is needed for an RC model to function as intended. As an electrical system contains different components that work together, there is a need for harmony. Communication between the components is made possible by connectors.
But that is not all connectors have to do. They have a more important role to play than simply connecting. This is because you can accomplish a connection even without the connectors. This why you need to consider the following features in connectors:
· How easy are they to use? It is vital to get connectors that have easy user manual. So, does the connector allow easy soldering? Or do you require other items to achieve a good connection?
· Conductivity. The most important think here is to allow current to flow through. It is therefore proper to check and see how well the connector allows current flow.
· Is it safe? Safety is a priority in everything. You need to have a good connector that will not make the pack blow up.
For LiPo batteries, getting as much power to your components and motor is paramount. If you get terrible connectors, your power supply will be highly affected. You may not even be able to get the connection you want.
You need a good connector because:
· A bad connector increase resistance. The last thing you want is you have overloaded systems and poor power supply because you failed to understand the connector types.
· Efficiency. A bad connector prevents proper power supply. This means your system will not work as efficiently as you would expect.
· You need a recommended LiPo charger. Not every charger you get on the market will charge LiPo batteries. You need chargers that have been recommended specifically for LiPo batteries. They have a monitor and tester for easy use.
Here are some of the connector types you should be aware of:
· Dean’s connectors: These are the best connectors in the industry and have been around for quite some time now. They have a nice design and slide together smoothly. They are not easy for newbies, though.
· Traxxas’ connectors: These are high current, easy to use connectors found mostly on RC trucks and cars. They don’t require heat shrink and are polarity protected.
· Bullet connectors: They are mostly main connectors for large LiPo batteries. They can handle a buck load of current, making them useful in any setting.
· XT- 60 Connectors: These are the most popular connector. They are, however, less adopted maybe because of their high price. They are smaller, compact, and easy to solder, which is good for first-timers.
· JST-XH Plug Connector: They are standard connectors you will find on any major brands. They are cheap and used by most logical brands.
· Servo Connectors: If you are looking or a better alternative to easy-to-use connectors, then you can count on Servo connectors. But they are only good for low currents.
LiPo battery connector types compatibility
There are three things to consider when looking for compatibility in LiPo battery connectors. These include:
· Charging needs. Every device using LiPo batteries has different charging needs. The power intake point of the user device and the charger differ between devices, and that is what you need to look out for.
· The male and female components. Connectors are made with these two components to ensure there is no accidental reverse connection. A reverse polarity connection can damage the battery or cause circuits to have issues, and that is why you need to be very careful with the way you choose your connectors.
· Adaptability. A compatible connector must be reliable, quick, and easy to detach. This makes it easy to replace or for separate charging.
Therefore, the connector must be secure and should endure different instances of handling. You need to focus on performance all the way.
LiPo battery connector types choosing
As much as there are many types of connectors, choosing may not be as easy as it seems. But that does not mean there is nothing you can do. Here are a few tips to consider:-
· The type of connector. We have already discussed some of the best connectors for LiPo batteries above. Now that you understand them, there is not much to follow up on.
· Your connection needs. What do you want to achieve with your connections? Every electrical equipment is required to meet specific needs.
· Easy to solder/use. If you are not very good at soldering, consider buying customer adapters that come with connectors. This is much easier for you.
Choosing heavy LiPo batteries is more about the project you intend to take. For heavy duty projects, for instance, the connectors come with low resistance components to handle any form of heat. It is very important to understand your connectors as we have shared in the article.
