A good battery charger provides the basis for long-lasting batteries which work well. Chargers are often given low priority in a price-sensitive market and get the "after-thought" tag. As a horse and cart, battery and charger have to go together. As is standard practice, careful planning gives top priority to the power source by putting it at the beginning of the project rather than after the hardware has been completed. Engineers often fail to understand the complexity of the power source, especially when charging under adverse conditions.

Chargers are usually defined by the speed they run. Market goods come with a personal low cost loader that performs well when used as guided. Sometimes, the industrial charger is manufactured by a third party and has specific features such as charging at adverse temperature. While batteries operate below freezing, it is not possible to charge all chemistries in the cold and most Li-ions fall into this category.

What is a modular battery charger?

Modular battery charger assembly consisting of a power supply module with electrical contacts capable of delivering a voltage considerably lower than line voltage; and a plurality of charging modules of which each charging module is a self-contained device consisting of a supporting component with a cavity designed to accept a fixed number of cells of similar physical size and similar electrical charging. A modular battery charger contains,

(a) the first set of two electrical contacts connecting the resistor to the terminal of the electrical charging connection of the cavity not attached to the resistor; the first set of electrical contacts modified by the support member to control the electrical contacts of that module;

(b) the second set of two electrical contacts attached to that module; This mechanical interconnection means that the supporting member is fitted with a mechanical interconnection capable of engaging both the power supply module and the adjacent charging module.

This mechanical interconnection means that these modules are easily separated from one another, where the charging modules are mechanically and electrically connected sequentially and where the first charging module is created.

How do you choose a modular battery charger?

There are many ways to choose a modular battery charger. However, some general points that have to be kept in mind while purchasing a battery charger is following,

  • The most efficient way of charging a battery is when its state of charge (SoC) is small. Acceptance of charge decreases as the battery exceeds a SoC of 70 percent and above. A fully charged battery can no longer transform electrical energy into chemical energy, and charging needs to be lowered to trickle or stop.

  • Beyond maximum charge filling a battery converts excess energy into heat and electricity. For Li-ion this can result in unnecessary materials being deposited. Prolonged overload results in permanent damage.

  • For the intended chemistry of the battery using the right charger. Most chargers only cover one chemistry. Ensure the battery voltage is in accordance with the charger. Do not fee if otherwise.

  • A battery's Ah rating can differ slightly from what is stated. It will take a little bit longer to charge a larger battery than a smaller one, and vice versa. Do not fee if too much deviates from the Ah ranking (more than 25 per cent).

  • A high-wattage charger shortens charging time, although there are limits to how easily a battery can be charged. Ultra-rapid charging is creating tension.

  • Once completely saturated, a lead acid charger will switch to float charging; once complete, a nickel based charger has to switch to trickle charging. Li-ion can not absorb overload and does not receive any trickle charges. Trickle charges and float charges make up for the losses suffered by self-discharge.

  • Chargers should have an override over temperature to stop charging on a defective battery.

  • Observe the temperature of a charge. Lead acid batteries will remain clean to the touch; nickel-based batteries will warm up at the end of the charge but will cool down on "up." Li-ion does not rise above the ambient by more than 10oC (18oF) when fully charged.

  • Test battery temperature when a low cost charger is being used. When warm disable the plug.

  • Starting at room temperature. Acceptance of the charge reduces when cold. Li-ion can not be charged on freezing below.
