12V Lithium-Ion Battery: Devices, Making and Charging

Jun 22, 2020   Pageview:706

Do you have a flashlight? If you have one, there’s a big chance that the battery runs on a lithium-ion battery. In fact, they are not the only things that use lithium-ion batteries. Clocks, remote controls and watches are some of the many things that use lithium-ion batteries. There are, however, different kinds of lithium-ion batteries in this world. In this article, we will focus on 12C lithium-ion batteries and how to make one.

What devices do you often use a 12V lithium-ion battery?

Before we go further about making LiFePO4 or 12V lithium-ion batter, let’s talk about what makes it different from other lithium-ion batteries. The main difference of 12V lithium-ion battery is the constant voltage it gives during discharge. The voltage stays at 3.2V during discharge, allowing the battery to provide maximum power until the battery is worn out. In fact, this also helps the cell eliminate any unnecessary voltage regulation that can hinder the transfer of energy.

Of course, there is also a drawback of a 12V lithium-ion battery. Most of the cells need protection or outer coating due to its fragile nature. The battery’s temperature also needs to be monitored regularly so that it won’t overheat.

We should also note its age. Because of its powerful discharge that always gives constant energy, the battery tends to have a shorter life span than other cells. In fact, it can only be used at most for three years, so you should buy a spare in case it’s life ended when you’re doing something using the battery.

Because of its powerful energy and stable discharge, 12V lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for heavy things. Here are some of them:

Systems with solar power

Solar-powered tools use 12V lithium-ion battery often. LiFePO4 can be connected to photovoltaic cells without interrupting the recharging, making it ideal for solar-power devices. It can also operate an LED by using one LFP cell, so the owners don’t need to worry about extra dirt or clean the battery once a month (but you still need to clean it now and then!)

Vehicles

Many transportations use 12V lithium-ion battery thanks to the stable energy it discharges. The maximum output it gives also contributes to the battery being a favorite in the vehicle world. After all, an extra output is needed when someone accelerates the vehicle. So when you purchase bicycles or electric cars, don’t be surprised when you see a 12V lithium-ion battery attached to the said devices.

Small applications

The small applications we often used for our personal belongings, such as home EV conversions, electronic cigarettes, and flashlights run on LiFePO4 batteries. It is thanks to the battery’s properties and components that are safer compared to other cells.

Although it heat needs to be monitored regularly, the smaller batteries tend to have a stable temperature condition. Because the smaller cells are pretty balanced when it comes to thermal temperature, many manufacturers opt to use LiFePO4 for producing batteries for small devices.

How do you make a 12v lithium-ion battery?

Making a 12v lithium-ion battery is not as complicated as it sounds (although it’s not a snap of a finger too). There are, however, some parts that you need to purchase. The parts you need to buy are:

●Headway cells (32 of them)

●Buss bar plates (4)

●Lock washers (100)

●1x4 AWG cable

●Ring terminals (5)

●1x200A BMS

●Box (1)

●Cardboard (2)

If you’ve got all the parts, let’s start making it!

1.Take one bar plate and cut it in half. You can either cut it right in the middle or make two rectangles with the bar, as long as the plates’ sizes are the same.

2.Take the bar plates that weren’t cut, and then attach the headway cells to the bar plates using lock washers. It is essential for you to not to connect the cells backward or short the batteries, or else you’ll have a powerful energy that can melt bars. Attach the positives in the two rows, then negatives, positives, and negatives (so it would be +, -, +, -).

3.Make sure you mark the plates so you won’t forget. Don’t forget to attach the bar plates to the opposite side of the batteries too.

4.Tape the separate cells to prevent short (that’s why one of the bar plates is separated into two, so you can tape the batteries).

5.Attach the mini thin cables to the batteries.

6.Attach the BMS to the top of the box.

7.Put the batteries inside the box (add cardboard between the cells just like the tape to prevent short)

8.Connect the AWG cable to the battery

9.Add more cardboard above the cells, and then close the box. You can lock the box with some ring terminals.

10.Please charge the battery before using it.

Is it OK to leave your 12v lithium-ion battery on the charger?

This is probably one of the most asked questions regarding 12v lithium-ion batteries, as people tend to leave their batteries on the charger while doing their activities. Unfortunately, if you’re a multitasker, you need to stop and focus on charging.

It is best to charge a 12v lithium-ion battery slowly in a process instead of rushing it. You must also make sure that the battery won’t be charged fully, as it can trigger quicker degradation. So when the battery is at twenty percent, charge it. When it’s at eighty percent, stop the charging. You should also make sure that you charge it at a cool place.

We hope that this article is useful for those who want to understand more about 12v lithium-ion batteries and create one by themselves. Creating one might not be easy at first, but once you’re accustomed to it, you’ll regularly make one by yourself. Moreover, the amount of energy the battery gives is pretty rewarding. You’ll also save money when you make your own 12v lithium-ion battery, so why not?
