18650 Battery Dimensions –Introduction & Discussion

Jun 22, 2020   Pageview:3559

The 18650 battery is a lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion is a type of rechargeable battery that has been used since the 1970s to power our small chargeable devices. Portable devices have become the backbone of modern technology especially lithium-ion batteries.

If we imagine a world, where all the cars are driven by induction motors in place of internal combustion engines. Induction motors are far superior to Internal Combustion engines in almost all engineering aspects. They are more robust and cheaper. Internal combustion engines produce only the usable torque in a narrow band of engine RPM. Due to all factors, Induction motors are a far better choice than these IC engines for automobiles. Moreover, the power supply of an induction motor is the real hurdle in achieving the major induction motor revolution in the automobile industry.

Let us review how TESLA used Lithium-ion cells to resolve this issue and why these cells are going to become better in the future. If you break down a tesla cell taken out from the battery pack you will see different layers of chemical compounds inside. This lithium-ion battery works on an interesting concept called the electrochemical potential that is associated with metals. The electrochemical potential is the tendency of the metal to lose electrons. The very first cell that was developed by Alessandro Volta about 200 years ago was based on the same concept of electrochemical potential. Lithium has the highest tendency to lose electrons and Fluorine has the least tendency to lose electrons.

SONY made the first commercial model of lithium-ion batteries in 1991 based on the same concept of the electrochemical concept. Lithium is known to have the highest tendency to lose electrons and was used in lithium-ion cells. Lithium has only one electron in its outer shell. It always wants to lose this electron, due to which pure lithium is a highly reactive metal. It will even react with water or air. Take your mobile battery for example: whenever you use your smartphone there is a chemical reaction continuously happening inside? ?

Do You Know The Dimensions Of 18650 Battery?

What are these 18650 battery cells? It is a very odd name but you should know that 18650 is a size classification of lithium-ion batteries. This name means that the battery has a width of 18 millimeters and 65 millimeters tall and the zero refers to the cylindrical shape of the battery. All the lithium-ion batteries with cylindrical shapes follow the same naming convention. Like other batteries having names 16340, 14500, 17670 & 10440. 18650 cells are rated at 3.6, 3.65, or 3.7 Volts.

Most cells fully discharge at 2.5 volts and get fully charged at 4.2 Volts. Some of the 18650 cells can store about 4500 milliamp hours of power or provide up to 30 amps of current. All these things are great for knowledge but how are they affecting us? We may not know this but we probably own numerous 18650 battery cells. They are in the laptop batteries and maybe inside your garage inside your power tool batteries and they are in your USB power banks through which we recharge our phones. They are also used in one of the brightest flashlights and electric vehicles. People using vaporizers also have them in them.

Are All 18650 Battery Cells Have The Same Dimensions?

Yes, all 18650 cells have the same dimensions but many other cells have the same dimensions due to their popularity. Many manufactures follow the dimensions of the 18650 cells because they are the most commonly used cells available in the market. They are 18mm in diameter and 65mm in height. Yet their dimensions are standardized but there are many alternate cell designs available that have not gained the same popularity as the 18650 cells. Question is why these cells are better than the common AA battery cells or even C cell batteries. These 18650 battery cells have much higher energy density and load capabilities. Meaning that they can provide voltage and higher current in a smaller form factory. These cells can get a discharge and recharge many more times and lasts longer on the shelf than double-A and C cell batteries. They charge very quickly with simple charging algorithms.

Another question comes: are they safe or not? Also, what drawbacks do they have? Well, all 18650 cells need a circuit to protect them no matter if it is a single battery cell or a battery pack. If it is a single battery cell then it must have a built-in circuit or a button top like in a AA battery which makes them 19670 or they require a battery management system if they are a battery pack. A battery management system monitors the voltage of each cell in the battery pack while it discharges and charges. If it is a button top or a BMS, it will prevent the thermal runaway that causes explosions and fires. Another major drawback is that Lithium-ion batteries are getting hard to ship without regulatory hoops

What Is The Most Often Used Battery Dimension?

AA is the most commonly used battery cell in the world. The AAA size is the fastest-growing size in the market nowadays. Other sizes like the C, D & 9 V are used for more specific applications that have a steady demand. Besides, other cells like the micro alkaline coin cells and button cells are used in industrial and medical applications.

Conclusion:

The 18650 battery cells are the most popular cylindrical used cells today. Other cell manufacturers due to their popularity in the market also copy them in dimensions but other cells have not been able to achieve as much popularity as these cells. Yes, they require the same protective measures as other cells, it is just their dimension that makes them popular. As long as they do not get in really high temperatures they have a protection circuit so they don’t get abused like getting punctured and are safe for common use. These are the only cells that have the dimensions of 18mm diameter and height 65mm and can provide with 3.7V voltage and rated capacity of about 1500-6500mah.
