Every tech item today that is for our ease requires some protective measures for itself i.e. to keep itself protective from external dangers and enhance its performance. Today all the mobile devices that we use are mobile for a reason and the reason is that they don’t require a power cable to be plugged-in a socket all the time to operate. Now we can carry them with us and use them at the place of our choosing. What is making this possible? It’s the rechargeable batteries that are powering them and making them more convenient for their users. All the mobiles and laptops today are operated by lithium-ion batteries.
For these batteries to perform better and to keep themselves safe they use a management system called battery management system. This battery management system also makes these batteries smarter. Now let’s discuss what this battery management system is.
What is meant by battery management system?
A battery management system manages the operating of a battery by keeping it to operate its safe mode, monitors its state, reports the data, and controls the environment also. The safe operating area is the voltage and current conditions on which the device operated without damaging itself. Controlling of maximum voltage, voltage current, power, and junction temperature comes under this curve.?
The control of the current is done in such a way that BMS monitors every cell in the battery pack and calculates how much current is exactly required to the battery to safely take in (charge) and take out (discharge) without damaging the battery pack. These calculated charges are then sent to the source and load that are responsible for respecting the limits of these charge and discharge rates.
This system also calculates the amount of energy remaining in the battery by monitoring the cell voltage and tracking the amount of energy going in and out of the battery pack. This can also be called as a fuel gauge that keeps a check on how much power is left in the battery.?
The most important role of this battery management system is keeping the battery pack safe from damaging. This is done by checking for short circuits, loose connections, and breakdowns. This keeps the health of the battery to the optimum level.
This system also keeps the energy level of all the cells the same. This is done by bleeding off the energy of the more powered cells to the level of less powered cells. Doing this ensures the maximum amount of usable energy.?
This system also controls the temperature of the battery pack so that it doesn’t get overheated by managing the battery fans to regulate the temperature within the battery pack.??
It also provides digital information regarding the battery pack; its motor controllers & charges. This is done by digitally displaying the data using CANBUS, analog output, and digital outputs.?
It also stores error codes and diagnostic information inside for fixing if any problem arises. This system can be called a battery’s doctor too.
How do you bypass BMS circuit?
Bypassing a BMS circuit means to bypass the cell that fails as an open circuit, this will allow the current to flow around the failed battery cell so that the series remains usable. This allows the charging and discharging of the cells in series to keep it alive.
Bypass of a BMS goes like this:
You ignore the -p and both discharge wires are soldered to the pack main -&+. Also, the -b and -c must be soldered too. Doing this you keep the balancing feature, but you will lose the low voltage cut-off (LVC) function. The most important thing to remember here is to program your controller to cut the discharge or you will kill the pack.
Advantages of the BMS circuit
The purpose of the battery management system is to keep all the cells whiten a battery limited to their precise operational window. This operational window consists of current, voltage, and temperature. Having a Battery Management System (BMS) has many advantages and all of them are associated with keeping your battery pack safe and in good health, also It provides guidelines digitally regarding how the battery pack is working.
Following are some benefits that you get with a Battery Management System (BMS):
1.Controls over current supply to the battery.
2.Controls overvoltage during the charging of the battery.
3.Controls under-voltage during discharge.
4.Controls over temperature.
5.It provides you with good control over the internal comfort conditions.
6.Individual room control possibility is obtained.
7.Staff productivity is increased.
8.There is effective monitoring and targeting of energy consumption.
9.Improves the reliability and life of the battery.
10.It gives an effective response to HVAC related complaints.
11.Time and money saved during maintenance.
12.It provides flexibility in charge of building use.
13.Facilitates time-saving for individual tenant billing.
14.Enables remote monitoring of the battery.
15.Information availability is at ease.
16.Computerized maintenance scheduling is possible.
17.Problems are detected early and service work is done with ease.
18.Operational savings are increased.
19.The battery becomes energy efficient.
20.Growth and expansion are made more flexible with a BMS.
21.The risk is reduced.
22.Reporting is done intelligently.
23.The BMS deals with energy demand management.
24.Controls the temperature within the battery pack for keeping it from heating up.
A battery management system is one that keeps a battery being most the energy storage device that it is today. By monitoring the individual cell temperature, current rate while charging, and voltage rate while discharging makes it the intelligent mind behind the efficient performance of the batteries that we use today. Without this system, the batteries would have not performed the same as they do today. They probably would have issues while charging, discharging, and heating issues and would get damaged within a few months or days of their operation.
An effective battery management system is very essential for a battery to perform at its 100% potential. Without this, the batteries would only become simple energy providing equipment not the smart technology they are today.
