The lithium-ion batteries are the golf industry's future in terms of a golf cart for several reasons. The former battery used in the golf cart could not attain the required conditions of the golf environment.
The several reasons why we consider lithium batteries as the future of golf cart is:
Carrying Capacity
Golf carts need to be lightweight, which cannot be achieved using lead-acid batteries. Lithium-ion batteries increase the weight-to-performance ratio of the golf cart. This is because lithium-ion batteries are half the weight of a lead-acid battery. Therefore, this reduces the weight of the battery that is usually used by two-thirds.
Reducing the golf cart's weight means that the cart will achieve higher speeds with less effort, and the cart can carry more weight without feeling sluggish to the users. The weight reduction makes the golf cart carry an additional two average-sized adults and their equipment before reaching its carrying capacity.
The good thing with lithium batteries is that they output the same voltage regardless of the battery's charge. This makes the cart operate for an extended period, unlike lead batteries that could quickly go off.
No Maintenance
The central importance of the lithium-ion battery is that it requires no maintenance at all. But when it comes to lead-acid batteries, they need to be checked regularly.
The lack of maintenance practices in lithium-ion batteries results in saved working hours. It also saves money because the maintenance tools and products are costly. Spillage of acids is avoided in lithium batteries; thus, the chance of downtime on your golf cart is reduced.
Battery Charging Speed
The golf cart faces the same flaw regardless of the type of battery used. The battery needs to be charged, but charging takes a lot of time unless you have a second cart at your disposal. The time you use in charging your cart can put you out of play for a while.
A good golf cart must maintain continuous power and speed at any given time. Lithium-ion batteries can manage all these problems, unlike lead-acid batteries, which will slow the cart down when the voltage dips. Lithium batteries can be recharged to about 80 percent in an hour and can attain a full charge in three hours.
Battery Cycle Life
The durability of lithium-ion batteries is longer than that of lead-acid batteries because lithium chemistry raises the number of charge cycles. The average charge cycle of a lithium battery varies from 2000 to 5000 times.
Lithium batteries are quite expensive than lead-acid batteries, but this cost is catered for by its durability. The lithium battery is an investment that pays for itself over time.
The conversion of a golf cart to 12 volts is much possible. Follow the following steps:
Check the location of the battery compartment in the cart, then install the battery. The battery compartment is usually situated under the front seat or at the golf cart's back seat.
Connect the cables to their respective terminals. The positive cable must be attached to the positive terminal and do the same to the negative terminal. Tighten the clamps with pliers.
Smear petroleum jelly over the battery terminals to prevent corrosion.
Check the battery’s charge rating that is usually printed on the top of the battery. The rating helps in determining the period needed to discharge the battery.
Then connect the battery terminals to a re-charger. This recharging cycle helps bring back the battery to full power and minimize the build-up of sulfur in the plates.
Clean the battery terminals with steel wool to remove any corrosion present.

Can you replace your lithium-ion golf cart battery at home
The process of replacing a golf cart battery is straightforward. Most manufacturers provide a user's manual that you can follow during installation and replacement of golf cart battery.
The steps of replacement and installation are as follows:
Locate the battery compartment and open it. Most golf carts have up to six batteries. Disconnect the negative terminal from each battery before disconnecting the positive terminal.
Remove the battery brackets, then pull out the batteries one after the other.
Clean the battery cables and clamps using a solution of baking soda and water. Replace any broken cables, then clean and dry the battery compartment.
Install the new batteries to the positions held by the previous batteries.
Reconnect the positive cable to the positive terminal and then do the same to the negative terminal. Cover the terminals with a thin layer of petroleum jelly.
Repeat this process for the other five batteries.
If the batteries are connected in series, parallel, or series/parallel, then the batteries you are using should be the same size, age, and usage levels as the companion batteries.
Ensure that you check the date code on the batteries to make sure that they are brand new.
Charge the batteries before using them.
