According to the popular notion, “change is constant.” Well, if there is anything that has defiled that saying, it is a lead-acid battery. Over the last 160 years, nothing much has changed in the lead-acid battery. Since its invention, the technology is still used to start cars throughout the world. Even at that, we haven’t seen significant changes.

A lead-acid battery is a thin lead plate that contains water and sulfuric acid. With a little adjustment and twerking, you can have a battery. Nevertheless, once sealed, you don’t have to add water to it. The Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) is a lead-acid battery that provides extraordinary power to support modern vehicles’ high electrical demand.

These batteries are extremely resistant to vibration; they are maintenance-free, non-spillable, and sealed. Furthermore, they offer minimal gassing, better cycling performance, and minimal leakage when compared to conventional lead batteries. The essential feature of an AGM battery is the high life performance it provides. The AGM battery is designed to run electronics for a more extended period and provide power bursts. Today, AGM batteries are used in several areas such as motorcycles, specials, telephone boxes, power banks for offices, aircraft, and the military.

AGM batteries vs. Regular Car Batteries

Today, AGM car batteries offer unbeatable advantages when compared with standard batteries. Here are a few benefits of AGM batteries over regular batteries.

?Safer to handle

?Fast recharging

?Special valves, which protects its lifespan

?More durable construction

?Quick start

During AGM batteries’ lifespan, they can start a vehicle engine more than 59,000 times, which is three times than your conventional battery can handle. Also, AGM batteries charge faster than the standard battery. Using a regular battery to start your engine depletes the battery before the alternator starts working. During this, the alternator recharges the battery and ensures every electrical component runs appropriately.

Due to AGM batteries’ absorbed mats, they can withstand vibration and shake better than your regular battery. Since they are listed as spill-proof, it is easier to transport them either by road or air.

How does AGM Battery work?

The superpower ability of the AGM battery comes from an addition to its previous invention. With a little design change, it transforms the lifespan of the battery. Firstly, the valve prevents evaporated water from moving out of the battery case. You can liken this process to that of coffee bean bags that have only one-way value.

Fundamentally, the AGM battery comprises water, lead, and sulfuric acid. The molecules move towards the lead plates when they draw power, which leaves the lead sulfate and water. What happens here is that you are eliminating the sulfuric acid from the solution, which generates a chemical reaction between the pastes on the plates. During the charging process, the entire process is reversed.

Nevertheless, there is every likelihood that the battery may lose water when electricity splits hydrogen and oxygen. The electrolyte stays more acidic when it loses water, which cuts the chemical reaction’s strength and weakens the battery lifespan.

How do you know when your AGM battery is charged?

Ideally, the standard charging time of an AGM battery should not exceed 20 hours. Furthermore, depending on the charge you use, you can set the charger to the finished current you desire. At times, some battery comes with an indicator to show when it is fully charged.

You will know your AGM battery is fully charged when the voltage ranges between 12.8 and 12.9. nevertheless, if the voltage reading shows 10.5 volts as fully charged, it means you have a short-cell battery.

Furthermore, you should charge your AGM battery using a charger with a mode switch for your type of battery. It is recommended that the charger should have a current limited to 0.2C of the battery capacity.

What setting do you use to charge an AGM battery?

The setting would depend on the charger. If the charger comes with a setting for AGM, you can use it to charge your battery fully. To maximize the battery life, you would need a voltage-regulated charger, which comes with temperature compensation.

It is recommended to set the initial charge current to 0.20 x C to charge the battery fully in a reasonable time. You can also set it lower, but this would increase the battery’s charging time before using it.

For a 12V battery, the charging voltage would depend on the degree. For instance, at 32F, you have to charge the battery under a 15.30 voltage. Furthermore, if the temperature is 104F, the charging voltage will be 14.34. AGM battery chargers have different charge settings, which you need to understand. Remember, overcharging kills the battery.

Note: There is no specific setting for an AGM battery because different charger has their own setting.

How do you charge a new AGM battery?

To charge a new AGM battery, you need to connect the battery with a battery charger. The role of a battery charger is to do three jobs. First, you get the AGM battery into the charge, optimize the charging rate before stopping the battery once it reaches its full charging point. Today, most smart chargers work with a different kind of battery while using the battery’s voltage to determine the battery type and charge required.

To charge a new AGM battery, you need to look for a smart charger with a reverser pulse technology to minimize the battery temperature during the charging period. Nevertheless, you need to charge the battery for at least 10% if you are not using a smart charger.

You can charge a new AGM battery from your vehicle alternator, which works well with lead-acid batteries. Although not the perfect option for charging AGM battery, but they do charge. The best option would be to use a battery charger connected to the main battery.

Conclusion

AGM batteries might not be the best option for many because they are expensive than flooded batteries; nevertheless, their design and safety features make them the best option for different applications such as cars, aircraft, motorcycles, specials, telephone boxes, and power banks for offices
