AA Battery Diameter-Introduction, Calculation and Comparison

Mar 08, 2021   Pageview:760

We have seen the introduction of different batteries, but AA batteries are the most common swappable power cells in circulation. They are mostly used in single-cell devices to power consumer electronics; they are widely versatile and available worldwide. This article will look at the various AA battery types, their diameter, and comparison.

Today, we have more devices integrated with rechargeable batteries than it was a few years ago. AA batteries are the best because of their voltage, size, and ample capacity. Furthermore, their specifications make them among the most used batteries throughout the world.

You would see them in remote controls, wall clocks, and toys as they provide a power supply to these devices. With the advancement in technology, we have rechargeable AA batteries, which have made life more comfortable than it was.

Are AA batteries different in size?

In terms of size, AA batteries have the same physical size. However, the specification of AA batteries comes in different capacity size and voltage. In this section, let’s look at the common ones. But first, let’s explore the features of different AA battery sizes.

?Capacity – a prominent distinguishing feature of the different AA batteries is their capacity

?Voltage – The non-rechargeable AA batteries have the same voltage, whereas the rechargeable batteries use different chemicals. Whenever a battery has different chemicals, the chemical composition changes the battery. Because of this, rechargeable batteries have different voltage.

The capacity of AA batteries is of different compositions. Here are some of these compositions.

?Alkaline Batteries - These have a capacity of 2700mAh. Because of their high capacity, they are used for children’s toys that consume a lot of power.

?Carbon-zine – They have a capacity of 110mAh, which is relatively low and perfect for clocks and remotes

?NiMH – Although a rechargeable kind of battery, they prove a capacity of 2500mAh and suit devices that consume or drains a lot of battery power.

?LiFeS2 – Another high-capacity battery with 3000mAh makes it an excellent option if you want to power or use a device for an extended period. Unlike regular alkaline batteries, LiFeS2 batteries have three times lifespan compared to alkaline batteries. Importantly, they are the best option for big toy cars.

?NiCD – The smallest capacity battery in our list with a capacity of 1000mAh. Notwithstanding their low capacity, they do provide a good current supply for power tools.

Is a 14500 battery the same as AA?

A 14500 battery is a lithium-ion battery that is rechargeable and physically similar to AA batteries. These 14500 batteries are among the numerous lithium-ion batteries available with voltage ranging between 3.6 and 3.7. However, their capacity varies, which depends on their features and purpose of usage. The voltage ranges approximately from 600mAh to 2000mAh. Nowadays, we have 14500 batteries with voltage over 2000mAh.

These batteries are optimizable for different purposes. For instance, a high-drain operation battery would come with a smaller capacity, a higher capacity has a low-drain operation, and for general uses, you can find 14500 batteries with equal capacity and power drain.

For instance, a device meant to use a NiMH battery should be used for any device that indicates it uses 14500 unless the manufacturer clearly stipulates that in the manual. Importantly, some devices such as photo cameras and LED flashlight allows you to use 14500 lithium batteries, AA NiMH, and AA alkaline batteries, but it has to be indicated by the manufacturer to avoid damaging your device.

Features of 14500 Lithium-ion batteries

?An inbuilt charger that allows charging of individual batteries through charging port, micro-USB, etc.

?Inbuilt protection, which protects battery overheating, over-discharging and overcharging

?It also has inbuilt protection that monitors the battery condition.

?Does not require prolong charging

?Environmentally friendly and safe for use

Are AA and 18650 batteries the same size?

Ideally, you are supposed to know that these batteries are of different sizes. The straightforward answer to the question above is that you should only use a battery suggested by a particular device manufacturer. This is important because each battery has a different voltage and capacity; when you use the wrong battery in a device, it can lead to overheating, and once that happens, leakage from the battery can damage or explode your device.

AA and 18650 batteries technically refer to different battery sizes, which means they won’t be used for the same device. Basically, the key difference between these two batteries is that one is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, whereas the other is alkaline. AA batteries can be nickel-cadmium, alkaline, zinc-carbon, or nickel-metal hydride.

AA batteries are approximately 14mm by 50mm in terms of size, while 18650 lithium-ion batteries are 18mm by 65mm. Battery sizes come in different letters such as AA, AAA or D, which refers to the battery type. Nevertheless, when you see a battery size with five digits like 14500 or 18650, it refers to lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Therefore, comparing lithium-ion batteries with those of AA’s is like comparing Spiderman with Ben 10.

Conclusion

AA batteries are the most used batteries in the world and come in different forms and compositions. AA batteries are needed to help improve our daily lives. For instance, we need them in our remotes, clocks, toys, etc. often times, we buy them without thinking how long they would last. AA batteries are of different voltage and capacity, which explains why some batteries for your toy or remote tend to last longer.

Importantly, before buying any battery, you should check the manufacturer’s specification to determine the particular battery you need. It is imperative to pay attention to their voltage, chemistry type, shelf life, and size because they are different battery manufacturers.

Nevertheless, with the advancement in technology, we have seen the introduction of rechargeable batteries, which offers a cost-effective solution. While consumer-size batteries such as AA and AAA are commonly used at home, we have seen the widespread use of lithium-ion batteries. These power cell phones, electronic devices, laptops, power tools, and medical equipment.] importantly, ensure to keep all batteries out of children’s reach because of the danger it poses to their health.
