How To Test AA Batteries-Introduction, Test And Usage

Jan 05, 2021   Pageview:644

AA batteries are an excellent example of the primary batteries, and they can be rechargeable or non-rechargeable. These batteries always use an alkaline electrolyte. For example, some alkaline batteries use the mixture of Zinc and Manganese dioxide as the electrolyte used in the battery's potassium hydroxide. These batteries have more advantages such as; highly effective, and leakage is low high shelf life, and many more. Most of the AA batteries are used in wall clocks, torches, small portable gadgets, and remotes. It is important to note that these batteries are used in single-cell devices only. Testing of AA batteries can be done using a voltmeter, multimeter and if you don't have a meter, don't worry, for you can use other methods to test. The drop test is the easiest of all the testing ways.

How can you tell if an AA battery is bad?

The first way to ever tell if anything is terrible is through testing. In this case, AA batteries can be tested using a voltmeter or using the drop test method. The drop test method involves dropping the battery's negative side on hard ground or a flat table. When they are dropped, you should notice that the battery may fall on the table and standstill, or you may notice that the battery bounces from the table and falls. The batteries that bounce back and fall are bad, while those that stand still are good. This is the easiest way to check if your AA batteries are in condition. Many have used this method and can attest to its significance. However, note that this method is strictly for alkaline batteries; avoid using any lithium-ion batteries.

Secondly, one may use the voltmeter to test their AA batteries to rule out if they are in bad condition. Like the drop test method, the use of a voltmeter is easy and efficient since the lithium batteries can also be tested. To use a voltmeter, one has to follow around four steps to complete the test. The first step is to check the voltage of the batteries as described by the manufacturer, and in this case, most AA batteries should be 1.5 volts, and when they are entirely used up, they should read 0.75 volts. Secondly, ensure that your meter is set to DC and all the connections are tight.

The third step involves holding the battery to the test leads and ensuring that the battery's positive is connected to the red lead while the negative is connected to the black lead. Once the connection is well set, read the readings in the meter. You will notice that if the reading is 0.75 volts and below, your AA battery is terrible. However, if you notice the reading is 1.5 volts, then your batteries are in good condition, and you should consider checking the rest of the device using the battery.

Can you test AA batteries with a multimeter?

A multimeter can be used to test both the AA and AAA batteries. It is a bit technical but straightforward to use once you know how a multimeter works. The multimeter can measure your batteries' voltage, and this you know it is calibrated with (DCV) direct current voltage, which is basically in batteries. As mentioned earlier, each AA battery has a maximum of 1.5 volts, and if one takes a higher reading, the battery is basically in good condition. The voltmeter, however, measures a maximum of 2.5 volts.

The multimeter that you should use should have probes connected to the terminals of the battery. Ensure that the black probe will be connected to the battery's negative terminal while the red will be connected to the positive terminal of the battery. The batteries always indicate the positive and the negative side, and if they are not, then the protruding bump of the battery is always positive while the flat side is negative. Once your connection is complete, read inside the meter, and you will get a reading between 0 and 2.5, and that will tell you the voltage of your battery. Always ensure that you have the correct polarity and setting to your multimeter, and you will always get a good reading that satisfies your curiosity.

How do you use a multimeter properly?

First, it's fundamental to know that there are different types of multimeter in the market, and one should choose the type according to the use they need it for. A multimeter has various parts, and each plays a significant role. A modern multimeter, for example, has a display, a selection knob, ports, and probes. The display is used normally to show the measurements acquired. The selection knob directs you to what reading you want to make, the ports there to facilitate the connection of the probes. The probes are always two, that is the red and black one.

The multimeter can measure both DC and AC voltage. To use a multimeter, ensure that first, you have set the meter into either DC or AC, depending on the type of currency you need to measure. Secondly, ensure that the probes are connected properly to the meter. The red probe is always connected next to a V marking and the black probe on the COM again. This will depend on the type of meter that you choose to use.

Thirdly, connect the red probe to the red terminal of your device or a battery that you are testing and do the same to the black probe and the negative terminal. Once the connection is complete, note down the reading on display. Always ensure the probes are connected to the right ports because once you interchange, your readings will be the same but will come out negative.

In conclusion, it is evident that AA batteries can be tested using a couple of ways, which include the drop test, use of a voltmeter, and lastly, by the use of a multimeter. Using the three methods to test your battery, you will always get to know when your battery is bad. You should remember that some types of batteries cannot use the drop test battery due to safety measures.
