Jun 04, 2021   Pageview:648

The recreational vehicle battery system is a critical component in the rig's internal setup. The battery powers everything inside the RV, including; the HVAC system, the refrigerator, overhead vent fan e. t. c. They are more popular as they are deemed safer, have a longer lifespan, and more efficient in that you can store more energy.

In the article below, we look at whether lithium batteries in RVs are worth it, how long they last, and whether an RV battery can be replaced by a lithium battery. Let's get started.

Are lithium batteries worth it in RV?

Lithium Batteries are known to be efficient. These batteries have become more popular due to their admirable features. The RV lithium batteries are worth it as many buyers find them more durable than the traditional lead-acid batteries. Some feature that makes RV lithium batteries worth it are;

1.The RV Lithium Batteries are made from lithium-ion phosphate (LiFePO4).

These batteries utilize the lithium solution in the cells, which is non-combustible. Such a feature makes them admirable for RVs as they cannot easily explode.

2.Have a Longer Lifespan

The lifespan of lithium batteries is typically rated to last to 5,000 cycles. When compared to lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries last ten times much. The batteries do not require regular maintenance hence considered more durable and reliable. The degradation process is much slower hence making them worth it to be used in RVs.

3.Battery Power

Lithium batteries battery power makes them a good preference for RVs. The batteries have a more dense and efficient energy storage system. It translates to more power available for the electronic systems in your RV that makes them run longer.

4.RV Lithium Batteries are much lighter.

The materials used to make an RV battery are much lighter. It makes the energy density of this battery much higher than those of lead-acid batteries. Additionally, the batteries have less physical space, which makes them preferable to RV owners who would try to fix the battery bank in a small compartment.

5.Reduced Voltage Sag

6.Power Security

The Battery Management System detects failures and communicates information.

7.Lithium batteries have a higher charge efficiency.

The batteries can be quickly charged to full capacity in as little as 30 minutes. It is possible if your charger can provide enough amps.

How long does an RV lithium battery last?

RV lithium battery life span is dependent on the depth of discharge. The depth of discharge is based on the number of charges and discharge cycles the battery is subjected to. These numbers range from 3000 to 5000 cycles. Lithium batteries have the capability of maintaining a depth of discharge of 80%. An 80% depth discharge allows a user to use most of the battery's energy without harm or affecting the battery's durability. Such a feature is admirable as it means an RV lithium battery can last longer than a lead-acid battery. Additionally, RV lithium batteries have an electronic protection circuit. The circuit includes a Battery management system that acts as the brain of the battery.  It performs functions such as monitoring voltage, temperature, and current drain of the Lithium cells. The BMS also ensures a safe, fully charged battery, optimized performance, prevention of damage, and longevity of RV lithium battery.

Lithium batteries are not to be stored with a full charge.  A charge of around 50% to 60% is recommended as it plays a major role in improving the battery cycle and reduces stress hence promoting an increased battery life. RV lithium batteries eliminate problems of voltage sag due to their voltage curve properties and potential to control high current hence offering more battery life span. Disconnection of lithium batteries during long-term inactivity proves beneficial. The batteries are known to have a low, consistent self-discharge rate of 2% to 4% of their charge per month. A lower discharge rate allows the battery to rest, improving efficiency and long-term battery life. RV Lithium batteries can last longer due to their incombustible nature and can withstand harsh weather conditions ranging from freezing to unbearable heat hence longer battery life.

Can you replace your RV battery with a lithium battery?

Many people doubt whether they can replace their RV battery with a lithium battery due to the complicated electrical system in an RV. It is no cause for worry as it I possible to replace and install a lithium battery in an RV. There are a few things to consider when you want to do a replacement. These are;

1.Upgrading Your Chargers

It is crucial to replace your chargers with lithium-specific chargers. Replacing them ensures faster charging. It does not mean that the existing lead-acid battery charger will not work, so long as it does not have automatic equalization.

2.Deciding how much capacity you need by surveying your current electrical system. Doing so will enable you to calculate the total daily consumption, decide the amount of maximum current draw for all appliances, and know where to install the battery.

3.Alternator

Lithium batteries have very little internal resistance. It means that they can take as much charging from the alternator as needed. It can result in an alternator overheating and overworking hence damaging itself as they are not designed to run for longer periods at full speed. To prevent this from happening, when replacing your battery, you can do the following;

Use a DC/DC Converter

DC-DC converter will keep the current at a safe level. It should be fully programmable for you to be able to set the appropriate voltages and current levels.

Battery Monitor

It is good to install a shunt-based battery monitor to accurately monitor the state of charge in your lithium battery. It will enable you to know how much power each electric appliance uses and how much power you have charged and discharged at any given time.

Conclusion

RV Lithium Batteries are more common as most people get to experience and use them. Despite cost being a downside for many people, the long-term cost of ownership of the lithium battery makes them more preferable by RV users. Apart from this, there are so many advantages when it comes to the range of conditions under which the batteries operate and the ease of use.

Therefore, if you ask me whether the RV Lithium Batteries are worth it, I would say honestly yes. It can be most beneficial if you dry camp a lot and live in your RV full-time.
