The technological advancements have made electricity an important part of our lives and for this backup is necessary. To provide efficient power backup for different applications, there are different types and sizes of batteries.

One of them is the battery type that we are going to discuss here. This is the Sodium Sulfur Battery and here we will discuss all about this type of battery.

An insight to Is sulfur a battery?

There are many different types of batteries, some have acid in them while others are dry batteries. But the Sodium Sulfur Battery is a type of battery that has a highly flammable metal inside it. This is the sodium metal that is present in a liquid form and sulfur is also present in this battery.

This liquid type construction of this battery makes it a molten-salt type battery that is a very unique and unconventional type of battery for the average user. This battery comes with a lot of features that we will discuss here.

Features of the Sodium Sulfur Battery:

Some amazing features of these batteries are discussed below.

?Energy Density

One of the biggest benefits and features of this battery is the energy density of this battery. This battery has a higher energy density. IT means that the power provided by this battery per every kilogram of this battery is excellent as compared to some other batteries.

?Lifecycle

The lifecycle of a battery is the process of a battery that makes it able to be charged and provide power to the load. If the lifecycle of a battery is not good, then it will not be able to provide efficient power for a long time. contrary to this, the Sodium Sulfur Battery provides an amazing life cycle meaning that you can use it for a very long time.

?Cost-Effectiveness

One of the greatest things about this battery is that this battery is very cost-effective. Some batteries are cheaper in their small sizes but when the size is increased, the cost also increases. The Sodium Sulfur Battery is not like other batteries because this technology makes batteries cheaper as the size is increased.

?Charge Discharge Efficiency

The Sodium Sulfur Battery is also very efficient in the process of charging and discharging.

What is sodium sulfur used for?

Like all other types of batteries, this type of battery also has a lot of uses and requirements for its productions. As this battery provides a cheaper solution when its size is increased, the uses are also according to the size of the battery. Here we will discuss about some of the uses of the Sodium Sulfur Battery

Power Grid Station

A grid station is used for providing electricity to a huge area of land. But when some problem occurs, there is no such source of generator that can be a backup for this large need of electricity. The Sodium Sulfur Battery is a very effective solution for power backup in this case.

It is because its efficient charge and discharge properties with its long cycle life make it a perfect battery for using as a power backup for grid stations. This is the reason why these batteries are used mainly for power backup for many grid stations.

What limits these batteries to be used in many applications?

Although the size of these batteries is gigantic it makes these batteries provide a lot of power. At the same time, the operation temperature of these batteries is very high. The Sodium Sulfur Battery operates at 300 to 350 degrees Celsius. This is one of the biggest limitations about these batteries.

Some proposed ideas about using these batteries that are not practical.

?Use in space.

These batteries pack a very high emergency density. This makes them perfect for usage in space. However, practically they are not perfect to be used there because of leakage issues.

?Usage in transportation

The Sodium Sulfur Battery was thought to be a perfect choice to be used in the transportation industry and also for the heavy machinery. This was not a practical thing because of the high operating temperature of these batteries.

What is the working mechanism of the Sodium Sulfur Batteries?

The following is the working mechanism of the Sodium Sulfur Battery.

The Anode

When the battery is in its discharge phase, the sodium core of the battery acts as the anode of the battery. In this case, the anode where sodium is present, supplies the electrons to the load.

The Cathode

The sulfur acts as the cathode here. It is separated from the sodium core by a cullender of beta-alumina solid electrolyte. The sulfur is present in a carbon sponge where sulfur is present in adsorbed form.

The Working of Battery

The main working agent in the Sodium Sulfur Batteries. This is a very important part of the battery because it avoids self-discharge happening inside the battery. It is because this is not a good conic tire of the sodium ions above 250 degree Celsius.

However, the temperature needs to be optimum, so this is coined by coating the electrolyte with some specific metals. This addition adds oxygen to the battery and helps in maintaining the temperature of the battery.

Charging and Discharging the Battery

When the battery is under usage, the electrons migrate from sodium to sulfur containers. Here the electron reacts with sulfur to form sodium polysulfide. On the other hand, when the battery is being charged the reverse of this process takes place.

One very interesting thing done here is that the battery running temperature is maintained by the electrolyte during the charging process so there is no need for any external source to maintain the temperature.

Conclusion

Sodium sulfur battery is a good option because of its energy density. However, its high-temperature operation is the reason that there are not many applications of this battery. It is commonly used in the power grid because of its power delivery properties. Here we discussed how this battery works and all about this battery.
