Motorscooter Batteries – Introduction, Need, and Cost

May 21, 2021   Pageview:778

Motorscooter batteries are the same as electric wheelchair batteries. These batteries range from 12 volts to 24 volts. Sometimes, two 12 volt batteries are connected in series formation to produce a 24 volts output. Experts recommend installing the batteries in pairs except for installing a single unit offering the complete required power.

The power output of a motorscooter battery is represented as amperes per hour and is written on its nameplate reading on the side of the battery. The nameplate reading of the battery displays its voltage and ampere per hour value. The ampere per hour value of the battery may be different from different manufacturers offering the same battery.

When deciding on the type of battery for your motorscooter, the ampere per hour rating of the battery is the first thing to be decided. Secondly, you have to decide on the type of battery that you want for your motorscooter. Two types of batteries are available for motorscooters:

1.Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM Battery) / Sealed Lead Acid Battery (SLA)

2.GEL Battery

Both batteries are safe and their chemical structure is placed inside a sealed case. These batteries do not spill and neither do they require any maintenance. The only difference that stands between these batteries is the quality and duration of their performance. Since a motorscooter battery is the only source of power, it is designed to provide a constant output over long periods.

Electric Motorscooter Batteries

Several types of batteries are used in electric motor scooters. The most common types of these batteries are the Lithium-Ion battery, AGM battery, and GEL battery. The two of these batteries are a type of lead-acid batteries but are different from each other according to their performance, mechanisms, strengths, and weaknesses. The type of battery to be used depends on the type of motorscooter that is the subject. The manufacturer decides which battery will be able to provide the best performance according to the required power and features of the motorscooter.

1.lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are the most recent form of batteries as compared to other types of batteries that are used in electric motor scooters. They are light in weight, robust in construction, and offer constant outputs. Lithium-ion batteries last around 3 times more than AGM batteries and are an excellent choice for motor scooter manufacturers due to their operational capabilities. Lithium-ion batteries require no maintenance and are free from battery issues that traditional batteries are a victim of. However, the only drawback with these batteries is that since they are comparatively new, they cost a lot more than the GEL batteries and the AGM batteries which makes them a second choice for average class users.

2. GEL Batteries

GEL batteries get their name from the jellified electrolyte they use. This gel electrolyte is produced by the combination of sulfuric acid and silica fumes that produces a gel-like substance. Due to the presence of jellified electrolytes, these batteries do not require to be placed upright. The reasons why GEL batteries are so suitable for motorscooters are the reduced evaporation of the electrolyte, non-spillage nature of the electrolyte, resistance to dangerous temperatures, jolt, and vibration. GEL batteries can produce more output cycles and have the ability to provide outputs for more hours which makes them a perfect choice for motorscooters that are used daily. GEL batteries are great in performance but are not very pocket-friendly.

3.Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries (AGM)

Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries, apart from their output, are very suitable batteries for motorscooters because of their construction. AGM batteries are called ‘starved electrolyte’ batteries because they contain a thin mat of fiberglass that is sandwiched between the acid-containing plates. The fiberglass mat is soldered and welded between the plates and this formation is rigid which makes it perfect for motorscooters’ vibrational and bumpy use. However, Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries do not produce as many output cycles as compared to their lead-acid counterpart GEL batteries. This is the reason that these batteries are not preferred by users who need extended use. However, it offers a more reliable approach towards rough use motorscooters due to its robust internal structure. Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries are pocket-friendly and are worthy of the money they cost.

Walmart Motorscooter Batteries

There are a lot of places where you can buy motorscooter batteries. Manufacturers have their retail outlets where you can buy from or sometimes you can buy them from other stores that may be offering good discounts. A lot of manufacturers around the world are now producing motorscooter batteries and most of the store owners are trying to become stockists of the best brands. Walmart is one of those stockists that sell motorscooters batteries from some of the most trusted manufacturers of the world. It does not only sell batteries made in the USA, rather, it is dealing in imported batteries from reputable manufacturers in China and Japan.

To make the process of buying motorscooter batteries easy and free from mistakes, Walmart has designed a very helpful and quick ‘Find the Right Battery’ section on its website. This section on the Walmart website allows you to find the correct battery for your motor vehicle (motorscooter or motorcar) depending on various parameters. You can find the batteries for new and old models of various manufacturers.

The ‘Find the Right Battery’ feature allows you to filter and find the batteries available on Walmart by selecting the year, make, model, sub-model, and engine base of your motor vehicle. This feature can also be used to find other accurate parts for your vehicles. Walmart has a long list of Vehicle make companies that you can choose from like Harley Davidson, Honda, and Kawasaki. Similarly, to get the most accurate results you can also input the cold crank amp of your vehicle along with its type (Motorcycle or Powersports) and required voltage. There are a total of 27 brands whose motorscooter batteries are available on Walmart. You can make use of the ‘Find the Right Battery’ feature to choose the best and correct battery for your motorscooter from the best manufacturers.

Cheap Motorscooter Batteries

Motorscooter batteries are available in different price ranges. They can start from 30 dollars to as high as 200 dollars or 300 dollars. The various prices depend on the type of battery and the type of motorscooter that you have. The price for electric motorscooter batteries is almost 3 times the price of the normal motorscooter batteries. Luckily, with increasing competition from Japan, China, and the rest of the world every company now aims to provide the best prices for similar battery technologies. Stockists like Walmart contain a variety of batteries for a diverse range of motorscooter models. The latest motorscooters that are using top-of-the-line battery technologies will be using batteries that cost more. A typical 12V 8.6 Ah battery for a 1000cc 2004 Honda motorscooter will cost around 30$, whereas, E-Twow Battery Eco S2 24V 6.5 Ah battery costs around 260$.
