The two common types are sealed lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries.

Both scooters are good, and we must set that clear first. Both lead-acid and lithium batteries power RVs for long periods of time. Also, the batteries discharge until almost empty; then, they can be recharged. This means they achieve a “deep cycle.”

However, there are plenty of features in each that create a difference.

Lead-acid Scooter Battery

Like any lead-acid batteries, lead-acid scooter batteries come with flat plates of lead in an electrolyte. This lets it store charge and provide power to run different applications when needed.

This is fairly old technology. But it has evolved into different variations over the years. There are several types of lead-acid batteries. There are flooded and sealed lead-acid batteries.

Sealed lead-acid batteries are the best for any case. They are more expensive and generally offer better performance.

Lithium Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are the more common variation of lithium-based batteries. There are many other variations, even within li-ion batteries. You will find options like lithium-ion phosphate that last the longest. Lithium polymer batteries are generally smaller in size, which makes it easy for them to fit in electric scooters.

Differences Between Lithium and Lead-acid Batteries

It’s not only the names that make these batteries different. There are some very distinct variations that can never be confused, even with someone who doesn’t have much experience.

Although these batteries are used in e-scooters, lithium batteries take up more space. They are more advanced in modern technology to offer more energy.

Needless to say, lead-acid batteries are still in production. You can find scooters with such power sources all over the world.

Here are some of the factors that make them different.

Cost

When buying an e-scooter, the battery plays a major role in its price. You will discover that scooters with less powerful batteries are cheaper. In contrast, those with higher power are more expensive.

Lead-acid batteries come at lower prices than lithium ones. This is why you will find these batteries in lower-priced scooters.

Capacity

The capacity of a scooter battery matters more than you can imagine. Sealed lead-acid batteries are cheaper, but they have lower capacity and energy efficiency than lithium ones.

Lithium batteries offer 85% capacity performance, while sealed lead acid batteries promise about 50% only.

Energy-efficiency and Life-cycle

Life cycle consideration is also crucial in an electric scooter. Li-ion batteries tend to last much longer than lead-acid ones. They convert a higher percentage of battery power to energy.

Also, li-ion batteries promise a longer life cycle (more than 1000) cycles). Lead acid generally offers about 300 cycles only, which is very small. Therefore, choosing li-ion scooters is more beneficial and can work for a longer time than lead-acid.

Deep Cycle vs. Lithium-Ion

Deep cycle lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries are the two main technologies in the world today. Manufacturers are using any means necessary to give the world sufficient power. And that is why we have these li-ion deep cycle batteries.

Here are some of the differences.

Weight

Li-ion batteries weigh about 30% lighter than lead-acid. They are hence most preferred in most applications. This feature makes it easier to find a li-ion battery RV than a deep-cycle one.

Discharge

You can get up to 100% charge and discharge from a li-ion battery. Even at worst, you can still get 80% efficiency from the battery. On the other hand, deep cycle lead acid provides less than 80% cycle efficiency. It ranges between 50% and 90%.

Life-cycle

Some Li-ion batteries can promise up to 5000 cycles. On overage, you will get batteries with 2000 to 4000 life cycles. You are looking at 400 to 1500 cycles for the deep lead-acid cycle.

Voltage Stability

You can get nearly 100% voltage stability with li-ion batteries. For the deep-cycle batteries, there is a constant drop over-discharge. This is called sloping voltage.

Environmental impact

Lead, which is the content in deep-cycle batteries and its electrolyte, is hazardous. Li-ion technology is cleaner and safer. Besides, recycling li-ion promises more benefits.

Cost

Lead-acid batteries are the cheapest on the market. They are more affordable both at initial cost and cost per kWh. Li-ion batteries are quite expensive.

How Many Lithium Batteries for RV

An RV depends entirely on its batteries when it comes to reading performance. This battery powers everything from the cooking gas to HVAC appliances.

For this reason, you need to ensure you have enough juice until you reach your destination. One li-ion battery is not enough even with its high capacity and power.

So how many batteries should you get for that new RV? At the very least, you should get four batteries. However, the actual number depends on your energy consumption needs. Some RVs may require up to six or eight batteries.

Another consideration is the length of your journey and the exact chemistry of the battery. These factors can affect the power demand and capacity of your RV’s battery pack.
