What are the common charging methods for batteries?

The life of your battery depends on how you charge it and whether the charging method is right for your battery or not. The wrong charging method will surely affect the lifespan and performance of your batteries. If the charging current is too high, but the chemical reaction taking place is not enough, then the internal resistance will cause the battery temperature to rise instantly. It might affect the internal material of the battery.

In the second case, if the charging current is too low and you keep the charger connected for a very long time, then it is not convenient for your batteries as well. Therefore, it is important to select the right type of charging method for your batteries.

Constant Voltage Charging Method

It is the most common method to charge batteries because it won’t cause any damage to your battery. In this case, the battery gets charged with a constant voltage, and it will keep decreasing as the battery is nearly charged. Once the battery is fully charged, the voltage will go into the floating zone so that it won’t cause any damage to the internal material of your batteries. 

Constant Current Charging Method

In the constant current charging method, a fixed amount of current is used to charge the battery, and it is the same as the constant voltage charging method. Once the battery is fully charged, the charger will go into trickle mode so that it won’t cause any damage to your battery.

The constant current charging method is quite similar to the constant voltage charging method, and they both don’t cause any damage to your batteries.

Mixed Constant Current/Constant Voltage Charging Method

To improve the charging method and minimize the damaging effects of constant voltage and constant current charging methods, the mixed constant current method was introduced. It will take the batteries less time to get fully charged and without getting damaged. It is also the fastest charging method to charge a battery most safely. The fastest charging means that it won’t take much time to recharge the batteries as compared to other battery charging methods. 

Pulse Charging Method

A periodic pulse current is used to charge the battery. In this method, the electrolyte already present in the battery gets more uniform situations during the charging time. With diffusion taking place, the energy will get converted into electrical power by the chemical energy. The charging efficiency is better in the pulse charging method as compared to all three charging methods that we have mentioned above.

Both methods of charging batteries are ideal, but you need to select the one that would suit your battery charging requirements. No extra amount of current or voltage is used to cause any damage to your batteries. 

What is constant voltage charging?

The batteries are charged at a constant voltage, and it is the most common method that is being used. The voltage stays constant throughout the charging phase, but the amount of voltage will keep decreasing as the battery gets charged.

Once the battery is fully charged, the voltage would go into the floating phase. Your batteries will start fully charged no matter when you unplug the charger, and the voltage won’t cause any damage to your batteries.

Some battery charging methods would cause damage to your batteries by overcharging them. This won’t be the case with the constant voltage charging method.

Safest Charging Method

The constant voltage charging method is the safest so far because a constant amount of voltage is being used in it. The voltage that was charging your batteries would go into the floating phase once the batteries are fully charged so that it won’t cause any damage to the internal material of your batteries. 

The right amount of voltage would be required to charge the batteries; otherwise, the high amount of current will only cause damage to the internal material of your batteries. This won’t be the case with the constant voltage charging method.

What are the fast charging methods for batteries?

The constant current charging method is the fastest charging method of all. A constant current is used to charge the battery till the voltage cutoff. Yes, this is a method where both constant voltage and constant current charging methods are used together. The constant voltage follows the voltage cutoff, and it holds until the current decays to the point zero.
