As of the end of 2017, the cumulative installed capacity of China's energy storage projects has been 28.9 GW, of which the electrochemical energy storage capacity is 389.8 MW. By the end of 2020, the total installed capacity of China's energy storage technology is expected to reach 41.99GW.

2017 globally added operational electrochemical energy storage 914.1MW

According to the statistics of the CNESA project library, as of the end of 2017, the cumulative installed capacity of energy storage projects in the world was 175.4GW, a year-on-year increase of 4%. Among them, the electrochemical energy storage project installed 2926.6MW, an increase of 45%. Among the various types of electrochemical energy storage technologies, the cumulative installed capacity of lithium-ion batteries is the largest, exceeding 75%.

In 2017, the installed capacity of newly added electrochemical energy storage projects reached 914.1MW, a year-on-year increase of 23%. The planned installed capacity of the electrochemical energy storage project under construction is 3063.7MW. It is expected that the global installed capacity of electrochemical energy storage will maintain rapid growth in the short term.

In terms of application distribution, centralized renewable energy integration is the largest new installed capacity in the world in 2017, accounting for 33%, followed by ancillary services, accounting for 26%.

From the perspective of technology distribution, lithium-ion batteries are in an absolute leading position in the global newly-invested electrochemical energy storage projects in 2017, accounting for 93%, followed by lead storage batteries (7%).

In terms of geographical distribution, in 2017, the global newly-invested electrochemical energy storage projects are distributed in more than 30 countries and regions. The top ten countries with the largest installed capacity of electrochemical energy storage projects are: the United States, Australia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

2017 Newly put into operation electrochemical storage capacity installed in China 121MW

As of the end of 2017, the cumulative installed capacity of China's energy storage projects has been 28.9W, a year-on-year increase of 19%. Among them, the cumulative installed capacity of electrochemical energy storage projects reached 389.8MW, a year-on-year increase of 45%. Among all kinds of electrochemical energy storage technologies, lithium-ion batteries rank first with 58%.

In 2017, the installed capacity of China's newly-invested electrochemical energy storage projects was 121MW, a year-on-year increase of 16%. The planned installed capacity of the electrochemical energy storage project under construction is 705.3MW. It is expected that the scale of China's electrochemical energy storage capacity will maintain rapid growth in the short term.

In terms of application distribution, in 2017, the proportion of new installed capacity in the user-side field was the largest, at 59%, followed by the centralized renewable energy grid-connected field, accounting for nearly 25%.

From the perspective of technology distribution, lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries are basically equally divided into China's market share in 2017; from the application distribution of various technologies, newly-added lithium-ion batteries account for the centralized grid of renewable energy. The proportion is the largest, close to 40%; lead storage batteries are mainly distributed in the user side field, accounting for more than 90%.

In terms of geographical distribution, the newly added electrochemical energy storage projects in China in 2017 are mainly distributed in more than 20 provinces and cities nationwide, among which the top ten provinces and cities in terms of installed capacity are: Jiangsu, Tibet, Shanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Xinjiang.

China's total installed capacity of energy storage will reach 42W in 2020

In terms of physical energy storage, according to the national “13th Five-Year Plan” hydropower plan, by the end of 2020, the cumulative installed capacity of pumped storage in China is 40GW. As of the end of 2017, China's compressed air storage capacity is 11.5MW, which is expected to reach 210MW by the end of 2020.

In terms of electrochemical energy storage, the cumulative installed capacity is expected to reach 1.78 GW by the end of 2020, which is 4.5 times the cumulative installed capacity of electrochemical energy storage by the end of 2017. Based on the above-mentioned predicted value of the three energy storage technologies, by the end of 2020, the total installed capacity of China's energy storage technology is expected to reach 41.99GW.

CNESA believes that during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period, access to energy storage for commercial use is closely linked to policy support. User-side energy storage system participating in demand response and providing auxiliary services for power grid is one of the important channels for energy storage to increase revenue sources and promote diversified business models.
