When a car battery doesn’t charge fully as expected, there are lots of solutions that you will always think about. While some of these ideas may be correct, others can cause more damage. Lack of sound knowledge about this problem can make you spend more than necessary. Of course, it is also a nightmare to suddenly find out that your car battery can’t be used especially when you have an appointment.

Are you wondering why your car battery won’t charge fully? There is absolutely no need to panic since everything about this problem will be explained here. This post is about to explain everything about car batteries including their life cycle.

Will a battery charger charge a completely dead battery?

It is very possible for a charger to charge a battery that is completely dead. This process can take about 4-24hours though. It basically depends on two major factors. These are your battery’s capacity and the power of such charger. Therefore, it is no problem when your battery dies completely since it can be charged safely.

It is recommended to go for chargers with higher amperage once your car battery goes flat completely. The reason is simply because such chargers will do the job within few hours. The lower the amperage for a charger you are making use of, that is how it will struggle to charge your car battery especially when it dies completely.

It doesn’t mean that there aren’t situations when your charger may not be able to charge your completely dead battery. Simply put, there are times when you will experience such challenge. Below are some of the likely causes.

1 - Failure to Turn Off Your Lights

This is a very common issue that most people experience when they are charging their car batteries. It can be other accessories that can take high amount of power to remain working in your car. In such an instance, it will appear like the battery isn’t charging. It is similar to a situation of failed charge since power will not be retained.

2 - Mechanical Problem

This problem can cause further damage in your car when not tackled as soon as possible. When there is a mechanical fault, the battery can power your car’s engine but won’t charge.

3 - Bad Alternator

With a faulty alternator, your battery will not charge as expected. It will be draining very fast. In other words, such battery will not hold charge unless the alternator problem is fixed.

4 - Depreciation

Batteries are like any other item or component in a car. The depreciation factor will likely set in later on. If your battery has become weak, it will be very difficult for a charger to charge it back to normal. When your battery has been used for up to 4years, problems like corrosion will start surfacing.

Can a car battery be so dead it won’t charge?

This has been one of the most confusing questions for car owners over the years. Some believe that when a car battery is dead, it won’t charge. On the other hand, there are people who believe it is very possible for such batteries to be charged regardless of their state. Whatever your opinion may be on this subject matter, always know that charging a completely dead battery can damage your alternator.

There are cases when such battery can be charged. Just as explained above, dead car batteries can be charged to start working again. Anything short of this means that there is something wrong somewhere. It is therefore recommended to hire the services of an experienced mobile mechanic who will diagnose what the issue actually is.

Please note that despite the fact that car batteries can be charged to hold power after being completely dead doesn’t mean such is a good practice. In other words, try as much as possible to avoid your battery from draining completely. This is one of the easiest ways to protect a car battery from dying sooner than later. A very effective way of doing this is monitoring the battery level constantly. This helps you know when charge is required.

How long does a car battery last if not charging?

When it come to the time a car battery is expected to last when not charged, there is one factor that is always considered. This is its working condition. By this, we simply mean the physical state of the battery. For instance, a new battery is expected to last for about 2weeks without being charged. Once it has remained like that for about 2-3months, there is a very chance that it will discharge completely though. Since it is a new battery, having it charged again will not be difficult. On the other hand, a battery that isn’t new will not last long.

Of course, one of the most obvious signs that your battery has become very weak is when charging is required every now and then. It is a signal that such is due for replacement to keep the car working. When the battery is old, it can last for 3days or less if not used before charging will be required again.

Some other signs to know that your battery is becoming weak and won’t last for long when not charged could be when the engine is starting slowly, corroded connectors, electrical problems and more. This is why it is very important for your battery to be in the best of conditions. Such will help it hold power for long without you bothering about when charging will be required. In case you don’t plan keeping the battery inside your car, it should be stored in a cool place. Places that are extremely hot will make a car battery discharge very fast.

Conclusion

Having seen the above, it can be seen that there are lots of issues about car batteries that need to be properly understood. Having an in-depth knowledge about such batteries will help to ensure they are in good working condition all the time.
