Zinc is higher in electrochemical series than copper or hydron. It oxidized to zinc cations, creating electrons that shift to the copper electrode. These positively charged hydrogen ions attract the electrons from copper electrons. The reaction causes bubbles of hydrogen gas, making zinc the negative electrode and copper the positive one.
This means that are two terminals that, when connected, cause a flow of electric current. Hence, the battery can produce electrical energy.

Modern electric vehicles did not appear much until the mid-19th century. An electric vehicle held the vehicular record for land speed for a time until 1900. But they were too expensive, had low top speed, and the battery could not go far.
