What is a parasitic load on a battery?

Feb 18, 2022   Pageview:1313

There are many things associated with batteries. You have to look out for these factors and take the initiatives to make them less to make a battery work better. Parasitic load is one of the phenomenon’s that drain your battery even if it is not plugged in.

The parasitic load can be normal on different batteries, especially the car battery. If it has an abnormal amount of drainage, you need to do something about it. The excessive parasitic load can be due to technical or mechanical issues within the battery. It would help if you let a mechanic check your battery to provide you with the best solution so that you can prevent further problems.

What is a parasitic draw?

Parasite load on a battery is one of the basic phenomena that are mostly present within batteries associated with your cars.

Electric Load on the Car

If the parasitic draw is more than the normal limit, you will see that your battery will always be down whenever you try to start your car. Parasitic draw is the excessive or great amount of electric load on your battery even when the car is turned off. While we are using the car, certain activities are going on that keep the car Active even if it is turned off.

Measures to Take

There are many ways to produce your parasite draw from the car. You have to take measures for it if it drains your battery at a greater level. Parasitic draw is not dangerous for the battery of your car however, if it is exceeding the normal limit and you are not doing anything about it, this can be a problem. In order to keep your battery says you have to consider these factors.

Cause of the Parasitic Draw

There are many causes of the parasite draw how were the major causes that when your battery is prone to your car's electrical system.

Even when the car is turned off, the electrical system of the car will keep on pulling energy from the battery.

It is called a parasitic draw because it is not benefiting your battery in any way. Rather, it is taking advantage of it.

This can cause many problems for you if you are not taking care of it. You will have to change your battery after some time because of the greater parasitic draw.

You will also have to provide a battery with extra energy to kick start it every morning.

What is parasitic draw measured in?

There are many things that can help you in measuring the parasitic draw.

Digital Multimeter

There is also a parasitic draw test that will help you in determining how much parasite draw is present on your car battery. This way, you will be able to take measures for your battery if it is exceeding the normal limit. There is a device which is called a digital multimeter that will help you in performing the parasitic draw test. It has a limit according to which the minimum it can handle is one milliamp. However, the maximum limit for it is 10 amps.

The Normal Range for Parasitic Draw

This is one of the normal ranges which is required for performing the parasitic draw test. There is a normal range that will help you in determining whether the parasitic draw is normal or not. It is between the value of 50-milliamp to 85-milliamp.

If the parasitic draw is above that, it means you need to get help from your mechanic. It is important to take the initiative for it if it is up to the normal value.

How to fix a parasitic draw?

There are many things that you can do in order to fix the parasitic draw on your car battery. There are certain factors that you need to consider before going for the help of an expert. However, if you do not know about these things, you have to go for professional help as soon as possible.

Check the wire leads.

Wire leads can be a problem because it is one of the important factors which give rise to parasitic draw. You need to check whether the wire leads are attached properly to the battery or not. If there is some problem with that, he should fix it and should also replace the wire lead that needs replacing. This can limit your parasite draw to a greater extent.

Remove the negative cables.

Negative cables on your car battery are also one of the reasons it is training a lot of power to your car's electrical system. In order to make sure that the parasitic draw is not more than the normal limit, you need to remove than negative cables.

After removing the negative cables, you should perform the parasitic draw test again to know whether it has induced any effect on the battery or not. If it is fixed, that means the problem what's with the negative cable which you have removed.

Remove the Fuses

By removing the fuses, you can also reduce the parasitic load of the battery. If none of the above-mentioned solutions work, then you have to remove the fuses from the battery. This is going to reduce your parasitic load, and you'll be able to save your battery from drainage. You can also increase the performance of your car battery.

Most people do not remove the Fuses because they think it is very difficult to attach them again while you need your car for use. It is not a difficult thing to do because you can put on the fuses conveniently within a matter of minutes.

Conclusion

Parasitic load is a natural phenomenon for different batteries. It is normal, and it also has a normal value. However, you should perform a parasitic draw test for your battery in order to know whether it is in the normal range or not. This is going to keep your battery protected from a lot of damage.
