Single-wire Bus

Among the most crucial features that make this possible is the Single-wire or 1-Wire bus that communicates via one wire at a low speed. Dallas Semiconductor Corp designed the system. It works by combining data and clocks into a line for easy transmission.

This system also stores the battery code and also tracks battery data like the voltage, current, temperature, and state of charge. Thus, it lets you know when to charge the battery or when you should consider a new one.

System Management Bus

There is also the system management bus, commonly called an SMBus, which shows an effort to activate a single communication protocol and a specific data set. With this system, it would be tough to get the right data whenever an action is needed.

The SMBus seeks to remove charge control and let the battery be in charge. Hence, a true SMBus allows the battery to become the master and the charger a slave, obeying every command from the battery. Levels 1, 2, 3

Smart batteries come in three levels of SMBus charging, 1, 2, and 3. Level 1 is no longer in existence since it does not give chemistry-independent charging. A level 2 charge receives full control from the smart battery and becomes the slave. It is an in-circuit charging, very common in laptops.

Level 3 charging can easily interpret the smart battery's commands and become the master. This means a level-3 charger can also make its own decisions, aside from the data it gets from the battery, making it more effective.

Smart Battery System

A Smart Battery System (SBS) is all about placing system intelligence inside a battery pack to offer more convenience and create a perfect battery. The system communicates with a charge management chip and other parameters to ensure the battery charges safely and remains in great condition.

Even though most SBSs still rely on an analog signal from the chemistry battery to end a charge, it still offers more flexibility. Also, the system features a redundant temperature-sensing functionality that improves battery safety.

The SBS is a specification for managing the smart battery, especially in portable computers. It all comes down to safe and effective charging, where the SBS allows the operating systems to do power management tasks through the charge. It does this by focusing on the estimated run times and determination of the exact state of charge reading.

This specification was designed by Duracell and Intel companies in 1994 before becoming a part of most battery and semiconductor manufacturers.

The SMS determines the SMBus connection you will make, the data to send over the connection, the smart battery charger, and the device BIOS interface, providing control. That means any battery-operated product can be installed with an SBS and will work well.

Another crucial component of this system is a special integrated circuit in the battery pack, a fuel gauge, or Battery Management System. You may have already heard about this system that monitors the battery and delivers the necessary information to the SMBus. This data could include the battery type, model number, manufacturer, charge/discharge rate, battery health, battery empty alarm, and more. It allows the device to shut down properly while protecting it from temperature and voltage issues for fast charging.
