Siemens, a global technology company, is collaborating with Northvolt to make the next generation of lithium-ion battery cells.
Under a technical partnership that includes lithium-ion battery supplies, Siemens will invest 10 million euros.
Founded in 2016, Northvolt aims to build the world's greenest batteries. The smallest carbon footprint and largest recovery range will help Europe accelerate its transition to renewable energy.
Northvolt's team is currently working on building next-generation battery plants focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration.
Northport co-founder and CEO Peter Carlsson said: "European industry is rapidly moving towards electrification.
With world-class expertise in electrification, automation and digitization, Siemens will become an important technical partner, supplier and customer in the future transformation process of Northvolt. "
The company plans to buy batteries from the plant and Northvolt will be its preferred supplier once mass production facilities are operational.
In addition, Siemens will provide its digital enterprise product portfolio, from manufacturing planning and design software to automation (including industrial communications networks and cloud solutions) to support the Northvolt plant.
"With our digital enterprise product mix, we contribute to competitive battery production in Europe, making full use of the advantages of software and automation: greater flexibility, efficiency and quality, and shorter lead times," says Jan Mrosik, chief executive of Siemens Digital Factory. "
After completion, it will become the largest battery factory in Europe and may generate 32 GWh of battery capacity each year.
