Do Lithium-ion Batteries Need to be Fully Charged-First Charge, CycleLife and Concerns

May 06, 2020   Pageview:1040

The lithium battery is the primary batteries found in laptops, smartphones, iPad, PDAs, and Power Bank. These are standard batteries because they are the most energetic rechargeable batteries available nowadays. The lithium-ion battery is incredibly popular.

The trend is increasing. Their technology is already in use for low power applications such as consumer electronics, power tools, and vehicles. And these batteries can easily burst into flames if used with extended use. There are two or three batteries packs per million of problems but only happens in extreme cases. Extensive research and development have enhanced the technology to a stage where it seems it is safe and reliable lithium-ion batteries. Hope these batteries will be on board of hybrid electric and electric vehicles and then get connected to the solar cell and mills. But the worst part is that the service life is still not enough, and the costs are yet too high.

Now we know what lithium battery is and where it can be used. But have you ever thought that does lithium battery has to be fully charged or not for being used? Or How can Lithium-ion battery last without charging? And How do you care for a lithium-ion battery?

First thing first,

Do lithium-ion batteries need to be fully charged before first use?

You are charging a battery. The positively charged lithium ions move from one electrode, called the cathode and the other known as anode, through an electrolyte solution on the battery cell. With the help of the electrolyte solution, the electrons concentrate on the anode, at the negative side. And vice versa when the battery gets discharged. The electrons move through circuits to the external battery, providing juice.

Discharge and recharges are better than the fully charged ones, as the batteries which are less charged do put less stress on the battery, as it would help to last longer, but these do not depend on modern batteries. But do not remember once you have fully charged your battery, do not let the deice plugin. Instead, just follow the shallow discharge and recharge cycle.

Batteries have built-in safeguards which would stop them from exploding if they are left in charge with a maximum capacity. You should allow shallow discharge as it charges hits the longevity sweet spot. So, you should let the battery undergo a full release of up to 5%, just to recalibrate its self- assessments. This mechanism is incredibly suitable for laptops and smartphones and gives you an "estimated battery remaining time."

You do not have to fully charge or discharge your battery for the first life cycle of the battery. Lithium-ion batteries have maximum capacity available from the beginning and the first charge and are no different from the tenth charge.

How long can a lithium-ion battery last without charging?

Batteries do require routine maintenance and do require care while using and handling. Without charging, Li-ion battery could last for 2 to 3 years if you do follow the below things:

" You should not leave the batteries unused for an extended period, either you use it, or you store it. Whenever the battery is remaining, do remember to check the status of the battery, you need to charge it or dispose of the battery is suitable.

" These lithium-ion batteries have a limited life and will gradually lose their capacity to hold a charge. The loss occurs progressively and is irreversible.

" These lithium-ion batteries are slow discharge only when they are not self-discharging when not in use or while in storage.

" Lithium-ion chemistry prefers partial discharge to deep discharge, so it is better to best avoid taking the battery all the down to zero.

" The lithium-ion does not have a "memory," so you cannot harm the battery pact without any partial discharge. When the lithium-ion cells drop down to a certain level, it gets ruined and the lithium-ion battery cell ages.

" You should try to consider replacing the battery with a new one in either of the conditions:

o If the battery run time drops to below 80% of the original run time.

o The battery charge time increases significantly.

How do you care for a lithium-ion battery?

You know the precious and the fundamental structures of that power kept in phones or any other electrical equipment. So now let us learn about some practical tips also how to keep your battery healthy without driving you insane:

" Keep your batteries at room temperature: You should always keep your battery at room temperature from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The worst thing that can happen to a lithium-ion battery is that you should fully charge it first and then keep it to room temperature. And do remember not to keep your phones in cars, or any other place where it is boiling. As heat is the most significant factor when it comes to reducing the lithium-ion battery life.

" Think about getting a high capacity lithium-ion battery, rather than carrying a spare:  Batteries deteriorate over-time, either they are being used or no. So, the extra battery will not last as much longer than the one in use. Do not forget to remember the aging characteristics while purchasing the batteries. Do purchase those batteries which are recently manufactured.

" Allow partial discharge, but do not let the full battery be drained: The lithium-ion batteries do not have a charge memory. That means a deep discharge cycle is not required. The battery uses partial discharge cycles.

" Avoid completely discharging lithium-ion batteries: A safety circuit built into the battery opens, and then the battery appears to be dead even the original charger will not be used. Only the battery analyzers with the boost function have a chance of recharging the battery.

" For storage, discharge of lithium-ion battery to 40% and store in a cool place: An extra battery would not if the original ones. The oxidation of lithium-ion is at a higher rate.

The lithium-ion batteries are a vast improvement over any other batteries; that is why every manufacture likes to prefer using lithium-ion batteries.
